Families Say Loved Ones Body Parts Sold Without Their Consent
When Paula died after a battle with pneumonia back in 2000, Harrington was devastated. But he says the greater shock came after Paula passed away, when the family was asked during her dying hours if Paula's body parts could be used for medical research.
"They just asked us could they get some parts here and there and they'd put everything back. And it wouldn't look like nothing was ever taken from her," Harrington says he was told.
He claims a call soon after from the funeral director shocked him. "He said, 'there's no way we can have an open coffin. An open casket funeral. There's nothing left of her.'"
Harrington says every bone in Paula's body, from the neck down, was taken. "There wasn't nothing of her left but her head."
