The Ark is God's radio,a thing of great power, used by him to speak to the Israelites. Those not pure cannot approach it or they will be destroyed as were the Phillistines(?) who stole the Ark and paid so dearly they placed it on a cart drawn by white oxen to find its way back to the Israelites.

I wonder... did it contain some radioactive substance? In what way were the Phillistines afflicted?

it is hard for me to get around the idea that if i sent an advanced communication/small energy-weapon platform with appropriate external decoration down to a bronze-age people and used it as a vehicle to help and protect them, it could be described in contemporary writings pretty much as the ark is.

The Ark was constructed to store the pieces of the original tablets brought down from Siani by Moses. God spoke to the Israelites from a ball of fire appearinf between the two cherubim on top.

Gettin' a little hazy here, but the Ark is said to have destroyed whole armies when carried by the Israelites against their enemies.

Time for me to take another run through the Old Testament!
