I hate questions that start "Some lawmakers/people say..."
You can be sure it's a bogus question.
I detect a level of passion from this President that I have not heard in a long time.
They should give us names
Pres: Two committees on the Hill responsible. One is the intelligence committee. Of course we consult with Congress.
Question (Wendell Goler): You talked about your decision to go to war and the bad intelligence and you carefully separated intel from right decision to go to war. WIth erspect, the intelligence helped you build public support for the war. Now that you look back, do you feel the intel bears responsibility for the divisions about the war and what can you do about it.
Pres: Everyone thought there were WMD. I thought the same way. We looked at the intel and felt certain Saddam had WMD. Intelligence agencies around the world felt the same way. Congress looked at the same intelligence estimate I looked at and came to the same conclusions.
It was so universal that the UN Security Council passed numerous resolutions, so when the WMD weren't there, we were concerned so we set up a commission to address intel shortfalls.
What we did find was that Saddam had the desire to reconstitute his weapons programs; he had the capacity. America was still his enemy. Of course, he manipulated the Oil for Food program. He was just waiting fo rthe world to turn its head.
I will continue to speak to the American people about the process going forward.
