The Republican sponsor of a flag-burning bill for which co-sponsor Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has come under attack from fellow Democrats said she called him asking to sign on to the measure.
Sen. Bob Bennett (R-Utah) told The Post he had never worked closely with Clinton before she got in touch with him out of the blue with an offer to co-sponsor his new legislation making it illegal to desecrate Old Glory.
The former first lady's support of the flag-burning ban — first revealed by The Post and viewed by experts as Clinton's attempt to woo red-state heartland voters for her potential 2008 White House bid — has blown up in her face.
Conservatives and liberals alike have shot apart the anti-flag-trashing bill, accusing Clinton of mounting a purely political end-run around the Constitution.
From the right, the American Legion torched the measure as "a long road to a dead-end" because it lacks any constitutional teeth.
But more important for Clinton has been the onslaught from the left — the core she needs for any hopes of a White House win.
The New York Times editorial page shredded her for pandering to the right, as did the Buffalo News, Winston-Salem Journal and St. Petersburg Times.
Even liberal comedian-talk show host Bill Maher took Clinton to task, blasting her as "an opportunist who doesn't really believe what she's saying."
The outcry has propelled Bennett — who voted to impeach Hill's hubby, Bill Clinton, in 1999 — into the unlikely position of Clinton defender.
"I don't think she's pandering," said Bennett. "I've discussed it with her. I think she is quite sincere."
But to add political insult to injury, Bennett predicted their push to ban flag-burning is headed for the trash can.

Ouch, when one lowly infamous opportunist like Maher (sexist pig) rips another, it's the kiss of death.
Of course any kiss from Maher is wrought with rot.
And why bile Bill Maher is referred as a comedian is odd since he never says anything funny.
Now I'm off to write a large donation check to Focus on The Family. A wonderful organization gifted with *wisdom* for the centuries instead of daily rating sound bites used by the biased liberal media to promote anti-Christianity and anti-Family vitriol. Focus on The Famly is wisdom, something whacky liberals are incapable of wrapping their collective thin skinned minds around.

Bennet's a pretty sharp guy..ya think he set her up..knowing what would happen?
As I was telling my carpenter over the weekend, "There ain't enough Spackle in the World to hide that crack." The MSM can try all they want, but they're just putting lipstick on a pig. Hillary! will never be able to get away with one percent of what Bubba skated with on a daily basis. She just does not have the warmth and the charm.
A lot of idiots out there wanted Bill to get away with stuff because he was the lovable rogue. But nobody finds Hillary! lovable (least of all, Bill). In fact, with all the talk of domestic spying and wiretaps, I think that people are starting to see just how much power the President has, and Hillary! is beginning to scare them.
Hillary came to Bennett wanting to sign onto the Bill.
In Hilarys case my advice to Bennett is " Beware of Geeks bearing gifts"
Reminds me of a joke I heard the other day:
Bumper stickers that read, "Run, Hillary, Run", are on sale.
Democrats put them in on the back bumper of their cars.
Most everyone else puts them on their front bumpers.
(Hopefully Hillary will triangulate herself into a such a political joke that she won't have a prayer of winning the Demwit nomination)
Out of the blue she contacts a member of the Senate and offers to co-sponsor a republican bill.
