I've always thought the prevalence of gigantic box stores devoted entirely to pets is a sure sign this country has lost its way.

I've got nothing against commerce, but the fact that these stores have a market, points to consumerism gone bad.

Excuse me? It's suddenly a bad thing that pet owners have a choice in what to feed their dogs/cats/birds/etc.....? It's horrible that people are taking care of their animals and not treating them as non-sentient slabs of meat?

Someplace I read that people in rich countries have less kids and more dogs. Something about getting the emotional companionship without the big financial effort.
