1) Defendants have no automatic right to bail, guaranteed by the Constitution, but must now prove that they are NOT flight risks, rather than the government having to prove that they are.

2) Federal prosecutors can now leak grand jury testimony to other prosecutors where the defendant happens to be so that they can prosecute him there.

3) Government now has the power to, in essence, write its own search warrant for bank records and other personal property rather than have the oversight of a judge.

"But some things sucked"

What things?

A lot of things. It permits the feds to search any American's home, office, or personal property without the person’s knowledge and without a warrant...any American's internet records can seized by the feds on a showing of "relevance" (as opposed to probable cause). It authorizes the FBI to acquire any business records whatsoever by order of a secret U.S. court and the recipient of such a search order is forbidden from telling any person that he has received such a request...an unprecedented law in this country. The definition of "domestic terrorism" in the Act is broad enough to encompass a lot of political groups (including many conservative ones) that the federal government probably doesn't much care for. The elimination of the wall between domestic crimimal investigations and the intelligence agencies may be necessary...but the PATRIOT Act goes way beyond what is necessary or what American citizens should tolerate. Domestic police can now share information with intelligence agencies that they've gathered during grand jury proceedings...information about people other than those under investigation...and all of this can be done without court order or any judicial oversight.

Two important things to remember...we now know (especially since the Able Danger revelations) that having the PATRIOT Act back in 2001 would not have prevented 9/11 anyway...and just as important...there is no Constitutional authority for the PATRIOT Act. Look at Article I, Section 8 and tell me where Congress gets the authority.
