EU to condemn Iran leader on Israel, warn on nukes

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European Union leaders were set to condemn Iran's president for denying the Holocaust and warn Tehran the opportunity for a diplomatic solution to its nuclear programme cannot stay open forever, diplomats said on Thursday.

A summit statement drafted by EU foreign ministers said of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's statement that the Nazi mass extermination of Jews was a myth: "These comments are wholly unacceptable and have no place in civilised political debate."

It also voiced grave concern at Iran's failure to remove suspicions about its nuclear intentions and said: "The window of opportunity will not remain open indefinitely."

Ahmadinejad, a former Revolutionary Guardsman who was elected president in June, in October called Israel a "tumour" which must be "wiped off the map", provoking a diplomatic storm and stoking up fears about Iran's nuclear ambitions.

Last week he aired his doubts about the veracity of the Holocaust, in which 6 million Jews were killed by Nazi Germany. And on Wednesday, he said the Holocaust was a "legend". His comments drew rebuke the world over.

Diplomats said the tough language on Iran was part of a wider EU statement on the Middle East to be issued either on Thursday night or Friday.

The draft said Iran's resumption of the conversion of uranium ore, a precursor to making enriched fuel that can be used for power stations or weapons, only added to profound EU concerns about Iran's intentions.

It said the EU would keep its diplomatic options under review and calibrate its approach "given provocative political moves by Iran since May".

The EU would do well to realize that Iran will soon have if
not does have, missles capable of reaching Europe.

I wouldn't put a single ounce of weight into this so-called "threat".

This is Europe, remember? The same bunch of pacifist weenies who were cutting secret deals with Saddam. In all probability, they're cutting secret deals with Iran, asking pretty please to not nuke them along with Israel.

No doubt the EU will shake their heads and make speeches, then do nothing. They didn't do anything about Hitler either.

I bet the EU is just trying to fire us up to go do something about Iran. Then claim we didn't exhaust the diplomatic effort first and we are being mean to everyone.

Once we finish with Iraq, it would be fun to stay home for awhile and let the rest of the world go to crap and have them come ask for our help. Naw, nevermind. Let's just have a 5 year party for the troops and make sure they all know we love 'em!

It would be interesting if the EU backed up their words with action. Not likely, but interesting.

And if the Iranians don't get with the picture and stop openly calling for the extermination of the Jews (actually doing it covertly is ok with the EU, just as long as the Euros don't have to watch) the French will be forced to surrender to them immediately.

If the euro-trash did try to back it up with action I hope we do everything in our power to help them just like they did for us. Kind of returing the favor for stabbing/watching our bags during our current war.

Sadly enough, you are most likely right on the money.
