As Election Day approaches in Iraq, the “CBS Evening News” tonight chose to lead with an al Qaeda video that showed masked gunmen executing Iraqi police recruits in the middle of the day, as well as two Iraqi women pleading for their lives before being shot. Correspondent Lara Logan interviewed Michael Ware, a western journalist who is so well connected in this part of the world that he is regularly given such videos. During the interview, Ware suggested that this particular tape was “an inspirational video” that aids “recruitment” and acts as a “fund-raising device.”
Ware then interviewed a Ba’athist “insurgent” who used to be a top-ranking military official under Saddam. At the conclusion of this interview, Logan chided the Bush administration for not using this man’s services:

I don't watch CBS. . .but will tell them what I think, nonetheless.
That said; maybe it is time. . .for the 'reason-capable' and patriotic inclined to take a giant step forward. . .
We have had the 'Great American Smokeout'. ..how about the Great American - CBS - Blackout'. . .(though think MSM can as deservedly be targeted i.e. 'MSM Blackout'. . .
Send the e-mails - tell them we will no longer watch their treason; and then. . .let them 'feel' our intentions. . .even if for a 'week'. . .whatever. . .
As long as they are determined to 'support; aide and abet our enemies'. . .we should not be supporting, aiding or abetting CBS/media; period.
All who participate can keep their car lights on. . .or 'something' to show committment.
And for as long as it takes for them to 'feel our pain' and make it theirs.
Oh, don't get too excited, seebs is just waiting for pretty, perky katy to get there before they become fair and balanced.
CBS is NOT on our side.

That's more along the line of my thinking, I like it. Dang, first I dump Hannity and Colmes (no great loss), and now CBS. I probably only have CBS on if a decent football game is on anyway.
What is wrong with these people?
You know what's wrong with them....They've had it so good for so long here in the USA that they take everything we have here for granted. They're blissfully unaware that 95% of the other people in the world don't live like us, and many of those people have none of the constitutional rights that we enjoy every day: they have little freedom of speech, they have no legal protection against unfair government prosecution, and most of them have very limited economic freedom.
If you ask me, there's a management problem with the top people in the CBS corporation. They aren't managing the news division properly and they're letting these politically left-leaning people run that division into the ground.
I may (will!) get flamed, but I don't see the issue here. Of course these videos are "inspirational" to potential Al Quaida members!! That's why they're disgusting to US!!!
I think someone was trying to deliberately misunderstand.

Time's Baghdad bureau chief is on my local NPR (WNYC) right now and he's taking some serious swings:
On the elections: "You can set any Disneyland date you want. It will look like an election, it will sound like an election, but it won't be anything other than a sham."
Other broadsides:
"Honestly, I see day by day as we add to the ranks of the insurgency. I've seen civilians atomized before my eyes by the military. That's not meant to be a criticism of the individual soldiers or the military...."
Asked whether there are going to be other Fallujah like situations, he said, "Absolutely. Fallujah was a spectacular act of defiance for the insurgents. But there will be similar acts here, there, everywhere. This doesn't feel like victory for me."
"We are giving the birth to the next generation of jihadists. 9/11 was a pandora's box. Bin Laden was then hoping for a platform to propel the cause...and we gave it to him."
"Insurgents used to say to me, 'I'm fighting to get the U.S. out of Iraq--Iraq for Iraqis.' Now they say, 'I'm fighting for Islam.' We've created the next Bin Laden, Zarqawi. He was a marginal figure before the war, and now, he's actually competing with him for primacy."

How am I supposed to respond to quotes that were NOT in the original post??? I was responding to the post. The post correctly stated that the videos were recruitment and fund-raising tools.
"I certainly go out there and expose myself. I've been to the safe houses. I surrender myself to their control. I've sat in living rooms face-to-face with these men," he said.
"Maybe I am too close to all of this. I've been this close, and it terrifies me. It terrifies me on a personal level and it terrifies me in terms of what we are up against. This is far more serious, far more organized, committed, than many of us realized."
Ware denies he's being used by terror groups and said he filters what he learns, regardless of the source.

He said just getting a hostage videotape brought him close to (crossing) that line.
"Giving some poor fellow three days to live -- that made me a participant," Ware said. "I made it very clear after that: I want nothing more to do with any hostage tapes. Any that you give me will not see the light of day."
Ware also is concerned that he may be getting too close to the insurgents and that one day they may decide to shoot the man who helps them get their message out.

The more I read your posts...the more I think this guy is useful TO OUR SIDE....
That may not be his intent, but he is presenting the dark underbelly of the enemy...and as such, is a useful idiot.
This quote brings it home for me:

Philip Reeves reports from Baghdad on insurgent propaganda. At the center of the report is commentary from Michael Ware of TIME on the tape, presumably from Zarquawi, handed over to him on July 4, 2004. The Iraq street is awash in inexpensive, roughly produced CDs and DVD's meant to rally support for the insurgency. For example, "God's Soldiers"—selling for fifty cents—shows American troops bursting into Iraqi homes, pictures from Abu Ghraib, and insurgents on the attack. They're crude, but effective.
However, the tape given to Michael Ware is professional in its production, virtually of broadcast quality. Ware says the tape shows the best view yet of insurgent operations. Unlike the DVD's aimed at Iraqi citizenry, Ware believes that this tape speaks directly to a global audience, intended to recruit both men and money to the cause. Ware narrates the tape as it plays in the background. Of his role as the middleman: "As journalists, we're always being used. But the quest is to find the truth."
