Tookie Williams at Age 29

Williams was convicted for the murders of Albert Owens, Tsai-Shai Yang, Yen-I Yang, and Yee Chen Lin, which took place in 1979 during two separate robberies. Williams was found guilty of, during a robbery, shooting Owens twice in the back of the head, and shot the Yang family up close with a shotgun, at point-blank range. To this day he maintains his innocence.

I believe the Governor might be receptive to an appeal for clemency, if Tookie would admit his guilt, but the man is willing to die with a lie on his lips.

I am so glad that he used his time in prison to atone for his sins and crimes, and to help troubled youth not follow a similar path.

For his sake (though I honestly hope not) this works in his favor when he goes before the ultimate arbiter, sometime tomorrow.

How we Americans contradict ourselves. We claim to desire rehabilitation for criminals, but when faced with a chance to back that claim up, we just can't bring ourselves to do it. The (good) things that Williams has done since he was incarcerated should be examined, lauded, held up as proof that prison and rehabilitation can work. Instead our lust for blood is so strong that we aren't willing to allow him to live and continue those good things, even though he would be incarcerated til he dies.

It's pathetic, distasteful, and most of all, hypocritical. We had a chance and we lost it. Yet again.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
