I was banned from the coffee pot when I was in my Infantry unit in Germany. You see, Top (1st Sergent) told me to make some coffee for an up coming meeting. I looked at his coffee maker and it was disgusting. Since I had a little time, I took the coffee pot to the kitchen and gave it a GOOD cleaning.
I even ran a couple pots of vinegar to remove the scale and deposits from the inside of the machine. I also scrubbed the brown scale out of the bottom of the glass pot. Had to use some industrial cleaner to get that part clean. Anyway, it was all bright shiny just like new. I then ran several pots of clear water. I then ran another pot and tasted the water for any chemical or soap taste. It was fine.
I then asked Top how much coffee to put in. After following his directions to the letter (I wrote them down just to be sure), I brewed the coffee. During the meeting everyone complained about the coffee. Top came over and looked at the coffee pot and said I had ruined his coffee maker.
Banned there after....

OUCH.
Takes awhile to build up that coffee sludge scale.
