Again, "There's history, and then there's Marine Corps history."

The version of history that's reiterated over and over at USMC boot does not match with the facts. But, then again, every time the USMC tries to rewrite Army history, they get it wrong.

The Army was formed on 14 June 1775 and has always been referred to as "The Senior Service".

AFRES inventory: http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/usaf/docs/tai-fy96-res.htm

Approx 500 units

Neithr is a clear winner, and I doubt we will ever have a clear total. Again, the navy number was combat aircraft only. The AF was TOTAL inventory. ALSO, the NAVY number does not include the Marines inventory.

Having a hard time finding good Army inventory numbers.

Don't forget the Guard ;)

I was actually surprised by the number of AC the Navy has. When you match that up to what, 12 carriers, at around 80+ AC per carrier, I wonder where they're keeping them all?

I always think its funny when Soldiers talk about Marines. They are always so defensive, we don't spend a lot of time worrying about you guys, we are to busy fighting.

It's funny.
Whenever there's a thread about the Army (like, say, THIS ONE), the USMC comes running ;)

If you REALLY ask around, it seems the USMC is overly concerned about the Army. After all, you're here, aren't you?

You want to look at in-theater depolyment numbers to see who's fighting? I'd say both the Army and Marines are shouldering the burden and leave it at that.

You think I just pulled June 14, 1775 out of my butt? Why do you think the Army does all the formal ceremonies around Washington DC? Its the Senior Service. Sorry to bring bad news to you.

you missed the point of my post, but I'll play

"There's history, and then there's Marine Corps history."
- which do you think sells better ?

but you gotta admit "The Few, The Proud, The Marines" is quite a bit better than "An Army of One". The Army's next slogan has to be an improvement.

btw, I was USMC in the 70's, got out to go to college, joined the Army National Guard (signed the second they said I wouldn't have to go to boot camp again, lol) and just retired after 18 full-time years there. I know both sides of this street.

Point taken. I have respect for the Army but I think its fun when we poke fun at each other. Were kind of like cousins. I can mess with you but if someone else comes around watch out. And remember pain is weakness leaving the body

How about "Join the Army - You Won't Get Outsourced".

The Military Sealift Command is a Navy asset headed by an Admiral. Yes, it does provide sealift to the Army as well as all DoD and various other Departments. For more info please follow this link:

http://www.msc.navy.mil/

The United States Transportation Command is the parent organization of the US Navy's Military Sealift Command (as well as the US Air Force's Air Mobility Command and the US Army's Surface Deployment and Distribution Command) it is currently headed by:

General Norton Schwartz, USAF

I believe that this command rotates but I don't have documentation.

Yep, "Army of One" sucked.
But every soldier in the Army knew that before it was ever in print, so you're a little late on that one.

"Be All You Can Be", however, is one of the most successful taglines in history and is far more recognized than "We're looking for a few good men."

How about this one: "The United States Army: We won two World Wars. We don't need no steenkeen slogan."

The only good thing to come out of that dumb slogan was this T-shirt:

I always hated that campaign and thought it was stupid.

I'll say the new campaign.... particularly for the National Guard, seems to me to be really dumb. A guy wanting to join the Army to clean up oil spills? During an ongoing war where many many guardsmen are serving overseas in a combat zone? Doesn't that feed right into the leftist complaint that "I didn't join the army to go to war, I joined for ______ (education, training, et al)"?

Recruiting environmentalists? I think it's a loser of an idea. Recruit Patriots.... "Be all you can be" and all that.

Just my humble, too old to be considered a good recruit anyway opinion.

Yes, it does rotate.

However, the vast majority of those ships are contracted container and roll-on/roll-off vessels that are directly controlled by the requesting authority. When it comes to land-based material assets, the bulk of these ships and sorties are Army controlled.

But, it's only a hook.
The Army doesn't really have a Navy ;)
When they let us put guns on board those ships, THEN we'll have a Navy.

The only problem with the "Be all you can be" slogan was that the Marines used to say, if that is all you want, then the army is ok, but if you want to be something more, join the Marines.

I propose the slogan, "Join the Army. Break things and Kill people."

I was laughing my ass off at that commercial.

Any soldier who'd been in past basic is thinking, "I know exactly where your're headed, son. And it ain't cleaning up no oil spills, neither."

ETA: The only oil spill he'll be cleaning up is the oil dripping from the 7.62mm hole in his HMMWV crankcase.
