President Franklin Delano Roosevelt asks Congress for a declaration of war following the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. [RealAudio available at link of President's address to Congress, 12/8/41]
Our enemy today, whose surprise attacks on us targeted civilians more than military, is as bad or worse a treacherous villain than Americans fought in World War II. They fight under no flag, and defend no territory. They hide in the shadows and caves, and they love murder. Our inevitable triumph requires the same commitment and unity to which President Roosevelt called Americans on December 8, 1941.
Yet the chairman of his party said yesterday, "The idea that we're going to win the war in Iraq is an idea which is just plain wrong."
Senator John Kerry, one year ago the nominee of President Roosevelt's party, accused American soldiers of "terrorizing kids and children".
Are Democrats today committed to victory like they were in 1941?
I'm going to move this to 'Breaking News.' :-)
What's Roosevelt's exit strategy.

Did FDR consult with the U.N. first? What about polls showing most Americans oppose military action against Japan?
The Japanese attacked the United States in part because the US had placed sanctions on Japan limiting its access to oil. Let the sanctions work! No blood for oil!
A DOW against jihadist organizations would be a good idea.
But, but, Japan attacked us.
Why did we go to war with Germany?
You just wrecked my pseudo-liberal response.
Damn.
Why did we go to war in Tunisia, why did we go to war in Belgium, why did we go to war in...? None of those countries were involved in the Pearl Harbor attacks and they had no ties to Japan.
but, but germany didnt attack us. there is no link between germany and pearl harbor.
Between Japan and Germany there was a treaty.
Did he meet the "global test?"
Roosevelt maneuvered us into the war.
Yup.... it's no accident that he ordered those aircraft carriers out of Pearl Harbor before the Japanese bombed and attacked Pearl Harbor.
Roosevelt had a chance to avoid the war entirely but the Administration killed the deal.
In a couple of days, 9 Dec, it will be the 100th anniversary of the Act Separating the Church and State. France, of course. 9 Dec 1905.
The US did make an unprovoked surprise attack on the French.
