This one is a bugger. I came home from work and had a pop-up for an on-line casino along with the virus alert bubble.

Things have gone downhill from there.

This must be an emerging epidemic. There is another thread in here about it. Once you get clean, stop going to porn sites!

You could try Ad-Aware from Lavasoft. It's free. Lavasoft

If you can do a system restore back to a previous restore point (I think it's possible in ME and XP), do that. Seems to be the easiest way to fix the problem.

Try AdAware, Spybot, and the Microsoft Anti Spyware program. Also, Hijack This.

If those don't remove it, Google the name of the spyware because you will more than like have to find step by step instructions to manually uninstall it.

Try Microsoft's Anti-Spyware program. It actually is a good program and removes a lot of stuff other anti-spyware programs miss.

HKEd over at www.suggestafix.com has a fix for it.

Just register (free) and go to the 'Malicious Code: Viruses, Trojans, Spyware and Browser HiJacking' forum.

He'll walk you through it step by step. It's a son of a gun to get rid of. Ed's not only the best there is, he also writes codes to get rid of these parasites.

I'm finding more of these that are not detected by Spybot or Ad-aware. McAffee found one of them, but unlike viruses, it did not block it at the tiee of install (and I have Zonealarm running and don't give websites permission to do things when ZA asks unless I REALLY know the site).

When I google the names of these programs, I get hits for sites selling the same software that the hijackers offer to sell to clean my system.

This crap should have been criminalized years ago. It is simply holding your computer for randsom. They never should have been able to install crap software without your permission in the first place. And these programs have some pieces that will attempt to reinstall if you don't delete EVERYTHING. C;early the designers know that you don't want it there in that case.

I call them virsues because that is what they are. Lobbyists appear to have conviced congress otherwise.

If you are having problems removing it from your computer, I have found this site VERY helpful...

www.techsupportguy.com

Go to the security section of the forum...they will help, and if you feel like it after they help you out, you can make a donation to help them keep the assistance free.

Check it out....there seems to be a lot of 'SPYAXE' going around...

I have had more viruses intercepted in my email in the past 2 weeks than in the past 2 years combined. Norton has done an outstanding job so far. As for yours, I have no idea.

And I forgot to mention zone alarm pro does a real good job on spyware, way above ad aware which I also have.

My wife had her computer loaded with Spyware a couple months back. I cleaned it up using the instructions found here:

Carling I did not read many of the replies but none I read mentioned what is probably the most important thing. Print this out.

Download spybot search and destroy. After you install it check for updates again. Now go to "Mode" and select "Advanced". Then go below to select the "Tools" option. Then either a list or icons will come up over on the right. Check "Hosts".

Now click on "Hosts" to being up a different screen. At the top will be a choice to "Add Spybot S&D Host List. Click on that. Now go back to the left side and click the Tools Button again. On the right check the "IE Tweaks" box then click on the IE Tweaks icon or name. Check the box that says "Lock Hosts File Read-only as protection against Hijackers"

Now go back over to the left and click on the Spybot S&D button. Now you will see a choice below to "Immunize" Click on that. Now on the right.. about middle of the screen there will be a button to "+Immunize". Double click that.

These instructions should prevent most spy's from going out to get more spys on the Internet by locking setting up known bad sites as unreachable by your browser. The immunize will help to protect against known spys. The IE Tweaks change I had you do will not allow any program to hijack your browser again.

You should also get Ad-Aware and spyware blaster. All programs can be gotten at www.zdnet.com. When you get there select downloads and type in the names of the programs.

Good luck. It is not hopeless. You can go this.

Also download the trial version of Window Washer. It is not a Spyware removal program, but once you have removed it with something like Adaware, it cleans the slack space of your drive ( a section that the spy removal programs don't touch ). These things could be hiding there until they are overwritten by everyday use.

My experience has been that while Adaware can identify the trojan, it cannot clean it up if it cannot stop it. If it is able to stop it and clean it up, it may be re-infecting the computer when it boots by running a front end that checks for the files, and installing them if they do not exist.

Two programs that I have loaded and ready are TaskInfo2003 and Autoruns.

Taskinfo is just that, it shows you the processes that are running on your machine. Google anything that looks suspicious, and find your trojan and kill the process, if possible.

Autoruns shows what the registry starts when Windows boots. Use Google to find your trojan in the list and delete it.

That should knock it off its feet, and Adaware can identify the beast and clean it up
