Feinstein may encounter Green challenge in'06

A co-author of San Francisco's successful ballot measure opposing military recruiters on public high schools and college campuses has announced he might run as a Green Party candidate against U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. Activist Todd Chretien, 36, of San Francisco has formed an exploratory committee and expects to announce a final decision in the next 10 days. In a news release, Chretien said he wants to make the election a referendum on the war in Iraq, forcing Feinstein to come to grips with polls showing a majority of California voters oppose the war.

"The Republican Party may be afraid to challenge Dianne Feinstein, but the Green Party and other progressives who represent millions of Californians who are opposed to the war in Iraq are not," he said.

Los Angeles businessman Bill Mundell last week announced he will not seek the Republican nomination for the 2006 U.S. Senate race, leaving the GOP without any clear contenders.

Feinstein was among Senate Democrats who voted to authorize the war, but recently she has said she regrets her decision and has joined other lawmakers in pushing for completion of a stalled investigation into the use of prewar intelligence. Many on the left have faulted Feinstein for not working to bring the troops home.

Anti-war and human-rights activist Medea Benjamin challenged Feinstein on the Green ticket in 2000, earning 3.1 percent of the vote; Chretien was her campaign's statewide student coordinator. 2000 Republican candidate Tom Campbell got 36.6 percent, while Feinstein won with 55.9 percent.

He'll probably pull more votes than Code Pink Medea Benjamin...

No Republican challenger....typical CA. What if Fine swine decides to call it quits? I read where some are trying to recruit Carly Fiorina. Any other names? I guess Issa is always a possibility.

Good point. stranger things have happened..

Maybe we should just put Parsky up for it then, hope he wins and leaves the current California politics and the University system behind. ;-)

oh, names, you want names in the CA
GOP up for a run at DiFi. good luck.

Mel Gibson (but why, he's rich and successful, just like aRnie)

Carly Fiorina (interesting moderate selection, she could oursource her vote or merge it with Boxer's)

Issa,
No..

It shows what a great job the party has done running a farm club and coming up with some decent prospects..

There are a few upandcomers but not quite ready for prime timers in sacramento, maybe in another election cycle or two they can field a winner. 'Til then,, ouch!

You got to run someone. How about that boring Jones fella who got creamed by Baba Boxer? I don't think Issa will risk his house seat, or should he. Maybe Hersheson could run again. I mean if there is a third party spoiler on the left, anything could (potentially) happen.

What about Bo Derek?

Carly Fiorina is a terrible choice as she's ruined what 2 companies, atleast one.

The problem in CA (besides so many Liberals) is it's a huge state and is expensive to run. Gotta by tv time and lots of it. I think Brent Jones (ex 49ers TE) may run someday. Pobably start out in the House against Ellen Tauscher.

Oh, good, a party-split. They cannot decide what they stand for. All the more voters for the Republicans.
