The only way buying a more expensive channel would subsidize a lesser expensive channel is if the parent company of a more expensive channel owned a lesser expensive channel.

There are very few channels now that aren't part of a larger family, and likely all the channels you're interested in fall into that category.

The fact is, there is no market. I couldn't boycott Viacom if I wanted to. I couldn't boycott MTV if I wanted to. There is suppose to be a free market, but I can't demonstrate to the media companies what I want and do not like. Ala Carte will force people to make conscious decisions about what media they're consuming. Without that, there is no market what's so ever. FREE MARKETS REQUIRE CONSUMER SOVEREIGNTY.

Do you know why there aren't many channels that aren't part of a larger family? The media conglomerates strong arm the cable and satellite companies by marketing all their channels new and old as a complete package. Then when they have an entrenched audience, they'll continuously raise prices. Just look at Viacom did to Echostar.
