Ex-Cowboy Michael Irvin Arrested in Texas Nov 27 7:53 PM US/Eastern Email this story

PLANO, Texas

Former Dallas Cowboys receiver Michael Irvin was charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia after police searched his vehicle during a traffic stop, Plano police said Sunday.

Irvin, an ESPN analyst and semifinalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, was arrested on an outstanding warrant for speeding in Irving after being pulled over Friday afternoon for speeding in Plano, the Plano Police Department said. Police spokesman Mike Johnson said he didn't know what kind of paraphernalia was found.

Irvin paid a fine on the speeding ticket and posted bond on the drug paraphernalia possession charge. He was released about an hour after he was pulled over.

"We are reviewing the facts of the situation and have no comment at this time," ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said.

Some backtrack:

Irvin pleaded no contest to felony cocaine possession on July 15 and was found guilty and sentenced to four years' probation, fined $10,000 and ordered to perform 800 hours of community service. He was also suspended for five games in the upcoming NFL season by NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue for violating the league's substance abuse policy. "You serve as a highly visible symbol of the Dallas Cowboys and the NFL," Tagliabue wrote Irvin. "While that visibility affords you substantial benefits, financial and otherwise, it significantly increases and magnifies the negative and detrimental impact of your misconduct on the league, its teams, its players and its fans (Richard Justice, "Cowboy's Irvin Draws Five-Game Suspension From NFL," Washington Post, July 25, 1996, p. D2)."

This should get him a contract extension on ESPN. If not they can hire TO to take his place.

You're right, but it's not like there isn't any previous history. ESPN canned Limbaugh for being politally incorrect, I'll be curious to see how this pans out.

If I'm a cop, I'm not charging Michael Irvin for paraphanelia possession unless it's obvious. I'm sure, whatever it is, they'll test it for residue.

Regardless of whether he is guilty or innocent of this charge... (remember he pleaded no contest to coke possession once already.)

I think ESPN should was his hands of him...

It is not like this is the first time that he has been in trouble with the law.

Those that want to give him the pass because of his football past need to examine the fact that he has been charged and tried once on a crime... and isn't he the same guy that stabbed his teammate in the neck with a pair of scissors...

the man is trouble.

That is correct. It's time to get all the facts on the table before we start pronouncing guilt or innocence, and rejection from the Hall of Fame.

Possession of drug paraphernalia won't even make a dent in his HOF chances. That Cowboys team was filled with drug users. He'd have to kill someone, declare he was a steroids user, and be a total ass to the sportswriters to not make the HOF.

But is he guilty of this charge?

You're making a leap, don-o. If he's guilty, he's guilty, but let's wait for the facts.
