NABLUS, West Bank (Reuters) - Jewish settlers cut down and uprooted hundreds of olive trees on Palestinian farms near the West Bank city of Nablus on Sunday, residents and Israeli police said.
Settlers from the most radical enclaves in the occupied West Bank have often attacked farms since the start of a Palestinian uprising in 2000, in which settlers have often been targeted by militants.
Settlers say that the land, which Palestinians want for a state, is theirs by biblical birthright.
Residents of Salem said dozens of settlers from Elon Moreh chopped down hundreds of the town's olive trees, the main source of income for 5,000 residents.
"This is not the first time that settlers have cut down dozens of olive trees. Among them were trees more than 30 years old," said Adli Eshiya, a local councilor. Villagers said it was the sixth such attack this year.
Police said that at least 200 olive trees had been destroyed near Salem and that an investigation had begun.
A spokesman for Elon Moreh settlement, Benny Katsover, said he was not aware of the incident.
More than 245,000 settlers live in the West Bank, home to 2.4 million Palestinians. The World Court has said that all of Israel's settlements on land captured in the 1967 Middle East war are illegal. Israel disputes this.
Settlers' anger has grown more intense since Israel removed settlements from the Gaza Strip this year under Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's plan for breaking from conflict with the Palestinians.
Although Sharon has said he has no further plans for unilateral withdrawals, he has said that some isolated West Bank settlements would have to go under any eventual peace deal. Elon Moreh is one of the smaller settlements.
All righty then.
Uh, not many Christians left, as the Muslims ran them out. Bethlehem, which was 70% Christian before the city was given to Palestinian control is around 5% now. However the population of Christians in the Jewish areas is increasing.
So 5% is not many, and Jews are helping them not persicuting them. You have both parts of your story wrong. I know, I am a Christian in Israel. The Jews in fact are credited with saving tens of thousands of Christian lives in Lebanon.
Jews and Christians get along just fine with each other, Muslims do not even get along with themselves.
I engaged in personal attack? Against whom?
Ah well, my error then. I meant A. Pole. Anyway, these threads where we all call each other names without actually doing so get really tiring.
If things get nasty enough, eventually I get called a "Christ-Killer", bigot, or a variety of other choice names. It just isn't worth the trouble.
That is an interesting statistic, as there are around 1.5 million Arabs in Israel total. I guess one and a half of them live in the West Bank.
This article is a crock of shi'ite. Muslim's lie, I don't think they are even capable of telling the truth. In real life, the population of Hebron grew by about 1500% in Arabs when the Jews returned after being driven out in 1929. The came from everywhere, some of them even from within Israel. They did not however buy the land, they just built.
You know, sometimes I think God is making the Arabs build houses for the return of Israel. When they finaly get their war started, they will end up fleeing just like in 1948. What they will leave behind will be quite handy in the end.
You claim Alouette is a liar.
Please tell us where she lied. What was the lie?
I went back to reread the posts and it was indeed rogue yam using the "L word".
Not closer than the settlers from Europe. But it were up to me, American Indians would be welcomed and integreated, rather than chased away and ruined. I like the approach of the French who sent the missions and were teaching Indians skills and to fare well among the settlers.
Palestinian Arabs (whether Muslim or Christian) are different story. They are not primitive tribal people scarce in numbers. They have old civilization, are very numerous and the full integration between Arabs and Jews is not very likely. Maybe the good fence can make they good neighbors :) Especially when drawn in the fair way.
Is it true? I would like it to be so!
You may question all you want. I have been a poster on this site for years and have been accused of deicide at the end of a particularly heated thread. On this thread, we have seen a FReeper called liar. I wonder what things were removed by the moderator earlier.
Why is it hard to believe?
I think it is. You can always say politely "it ain't so" or "I disagree", or even "wrong". And it is easy to be mistaken when you see someone to be lying. People are capable to be wrong, deluded, confused, biased, engaged in wishful thinking etc ... It is always better to assume that at first than to call them liars.
That is how it seems if the poster does not document the accusation. Even though you may have good reasons for not citing where and when, it looks like a cheap shot. You may be sure the moderators a looking closely too.
If they are a liar, it is best to point it out specifically or just not go down that road.
Sneaky? In what way?
I do try to be cautious with my posts. If you think I am dishonest and sneaky then perhaps I should have gone into law.
You have repeatedly called me a liar but you have failed to produce even one post I have made to this forum which contains a deliberate, intentional falsehood.
Do I really owe it to you to prove that I am not a liar?
No, it is still up to you to prove that I am.
