"The only reason I can think of for GOPers not being more forceful and authoritative is fear. I'm guessing, but I believe too many Republican congressmen and women, are afraid they will lose their next election IF they do not appeal to moderates. They believe they cannot take positions that might alienate their base and they are afraid of both Democrats and most major newspapers/media demonizing them for conservative positions and voting records."

I agree. As I've said, the Republicans are getting weak in the knees because of the 2006 elections and many of the Senators are thinking about running for POTUS in '08. You also stated that moderate Pubbies lose. I agree w that and also agree w Rush and others - -as I've said before, when Republicans run on a conservative platform (in most states - forget NY, CA, etc.) they win. Why many don't wake up and realize that is beyond me (we can probably forget the RINOs). Americans want men and women running the country (whether in Congress or as POTUS) who are leaders. There are many Republicans out there that need to get off their arses and act like LEADERS.

Is it really just fear of losing the next election....or justa desire to dodge problem statements that they know will be thrown?

The libs are ready to lob blows about jingoism, attack anyone's personal validity based on their lack of military service....plus, the libs have no problem exploiting anyone who agrees with them, even active duty and fallen troops and their families.

We have a few who are up to the fight, Young from FL and of course Sam Johnson. DeLay gives as good as he gets.....but a lot of the others would rather appear silen and statesman like that engage.
