You are right. The '600.00 dead' were soldiers. I didn't take into account all the deaths that are, I believe, referred to in military-speak as 'collateral damage'.

True enough. However, that 5 to 10 percent were the owners of record, which leaves out their wives and children. About 25% of southern families owned slaves.

Here is a site that has compiled the relevant data from th 1860 census. While I'm sure the census data isn't without fault, I'm not sure where you could get info that is any more accurate.

So if 25% of southern families owned slaves, 75% did NOT own any slaves. Sounds like the landed gentry had the slaves. So, when the average southerner waves a confederate flag, would it be because they loved being southern or loved owning slaves?

I'd wager that most rednecks' family backgrounds were more of the sharecropper status (sometimes lower than that of a slave) before the war between the states. Rednecks are more often known for plastering the Confederate flag on their trucks, clothing, walls and mailboxes. What does the flag mean to them?
