And you can be damn certain that I will be a very hard sell on anyone asking for deferment if, God forbid, we institute a draft.

No pay, compensation or renumeration with the appointment. That includes points. (It's a civilian position).

I'm waiting for the ACLU to force SS to have able bodied women register.

Why? The needs of the services will dictate how a draft is run.

As far as I can see, the draft is totally out of date and would do far more harm to the military than ANY measureable benefit.

There just isn't any place to put the so-called "average" kids that our society and educational system have generated in the most basic, dumbed-down unit that's left in the military. In the late 60's, we could figure that a draftee could do a little more than have weight/occupy space after six months' training; I really wouldn't want most of these kids I see working at Micky D's around me with sharp-pointed scissors, let alone a SAW, until they had a couple of YEARS under close supervision.......and, the last time I looked, two years is all we would get to have 'em around.

What do you propose we draft all these people for? Picking up butts?

Ronald Reagan:

"[T]he most fundamental objection to draft registration is moral...a draft or draft registration destroys the very values that our society is committed to defending."

Although Goldwater supported the war in Vietnam, he opposed the draft in favor of an all-volunteer military.

The Declaration of Independence:

"He [the King] has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures."

Daniel Webster, during the War of 1812:

"Where is it written in the Constitution, in what article or section is it contained, that you may take children from their parents, and parents from their children, and compel them to fight the battles of any war, in which the folly or the wickedness of Government may engage it?"

The draft, said candidate Reagan, "rests on the assumption that your kids belong to the state.... That assumption isn't a new one. The Nazis thought it was a great idea."

Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX):

"Conscription is not part of the American dream. It is not part of the American philosophy. It is not part of liberty. It is a totalitarian notion. Congress has the authority to raise an army, but it does not have the constitutional authority to enslave a certain group to bear the brunt of the fighting. A society that cherishes liberty will easily find volunteer defenders if it is attacked. A free society that cannot find those willing to defend itself without coercion cannot survive, and probably does not deserve to."

And yet it's hard to argue that the will of the people during WW II proved that a draft can be successful. As I've said during this thread, instituting a draft now is a "God forbid" scenario.

Let 'em come.

Maybe some of them will hang around long enough to read something that will cause them to grow a brain.

Good job. I looked into it earlier but can't serve on a board due to the year restrictions. I missed it by 3 months. I'm still trying to figure out why. There was no draft when I joined. My guess is they wanted a certain minimum age on the boards.

I can accept that.
But, by God, there will be no conscription ever again in this country unless and until we have exhausted the pool of the willing and able.
I had to work with the dregs of the draft, and I say our armed forces sacrifice more than enough, and do not deserve to be forced to contend with them .

Unfortunately, the Army is now accepting Cat IVs and they are starting to look at Cat Vs. This does not bode well.
