The prize for the most dramatic oratory in the United States Congress in the new millennium goes to fledgling Representative Jean Schmidt. In the midst of debate over whether the House of Representatives should vote on a resolution endorsing immediate U.S. withdrawal from Iraq she conveyed a message she had received from an active duty Marine colonel, to Representative Jack Murtha. Murtha, a decorated Marine veteran, inspired the debate earlier this week by calling for withdrawal from Iraq.
Representative Smiths message quoting the colonel was simple: Cowards cut and run, Marines never do. [snip] When people engage in debate within the boundaries of legitimate disagreement they should be respectful. But we need to maintain those boundaries.
Jack Murthas call for immediate disengagement took him far outside the boundaries of legitimate disagreement. He has never been able to articulate any plausible basis for his position on Iraq. There is a simple reason for that. There isnt one.
Reasonable people cannot differ about whether or not the United States should press forward with our war against the terror masters. For the time being Iraq is inevitably the principal front in that war. A congressman who tries to duck his share of the responsibility for prosecuting that war is displaying moral cowardice. Any American who recommends retreat is injuring his own country and calling his own patriotism into question.

For purposes of brevity, let me put it this way: 403-3
403 Members of the House of Representatives are aware of the consequences, 3 are not (or choose to ignore them). With those kind of numbers, what's to argue.
Millions killed in Cambodia by the Khmer Rouge? Hundreds of thousands dead in the South murdered by the communists North? Totalitarian government the norm in Southeast Asia? Soviet intervention in South America which we are still dealing with today in the form of Chavez and other assorted commie loons?
There was no enemy invasion, we didn't lose our freedoms and there was no change in our way of lives.
Only because liberals really don't care about the massacre of the innocent, they just pretend to.
Matter of fact, things greatly improved as social unrest due to the war subsided and our divided nation became one again. The only danger to freedom are those elements who demand blind obedience to the administration.
I know of nobody that demands blind obedience except for communists and Islamofascists. Which is why we fight them when we have to.
We, as free citizens, have not only the right but the responsibility to question why this war is (supposedly) necessary for our survival.
The war is necessary for our survival for any number of reasons. Number one, retreating from Iraq will cause it to return to its prewar status as a terrorist state. Number two is that the folks who will run it are even more whacked than Hussein and his murdering sons. Number three is the proliferation of WMD is a fact of life. The technology has become widely dispersed and we simply can not allow Iraq to become WMD central for the bin Ladens and Zarqawis of the world. Of course one didn't need WMD to justify deposing Hussein and friends. One needed only to know that Hussein was paying bounty for the deaths of American citizens and our Israeli allies to justify his removal but the policy of moderating the Middle East by allowing democracy to take hold is eminently defensible.
And so far we have not received an answer that makes sense.
You've received it on numerous occasions, evidently you're just not capable of understanding it.
Thus, we have to assume that this war is just another frivolous adventure.
We all assume different things, I assume you're a wing nut of the left variety by the stupidity and shallowness of your arguments.
Yup. That means he should not fear arrest, prosecution, or imprisonment, or lawsuit for saying it. "Freedom of speech" means that the State lacks the authority to shut you down because of what you're saying. As has been said before on this forum, freedom of speech is great. It lets us know who the idiots are.
Freedom of speech has no bearing on the reaction of your fellow citizens to your speech. Indeed, they enjoy the same freedom you do. And if they choose to flame you mercilessly because of your speech ... you just gotta live with it.
Scumbag Murtha has had his say, those of us who think Congressthing Murtha is a piece of crap ... and a coward .. are free to say so as well.
No, he is a machiavellian who was willing to ruin his reputation to help kill the democratic party and make himself Hillary's running mate - to secure the military vote - of course.
Thats not an answer, it's a hissy fit. Loosen your panties and address the points I made or take a freaking hike.
Actually, I think he's either channeling David Hackworth, or wants to fill Hack's market niche.
I defend your right to say hateful things about Congressman Murtha. I think he is a patriot.
On "Hardball," Tony Blankley just told Chris Matthews that Congressman Murtha, "is an honorable man."
Good enough for me.
Is he? You bet he is. He's beneath contempt. He's a disgrace.
Thanks for the explanation--in WW2 I never got to any PX and only received my Good Conduct Medal at discharge---never got the others until after I retired and made plans to go back to Normandy for the 50th Remembrance in '94--only have 3 with the action star plus the Good Conduct with my "name engraved"(whoopdedo)on it--put 5 yrs in(12/41-2/47) but they did not seem to give out as many medals back then (we got commendation letters in our files)---can anyone get Murthas records as to the issuance of the Purple Heart?--I believe he was given the Distinguished Service Cross on retiring from the Marine Reserve--wonder how he was in Congress for 32 yrs on the taxpayers dollar and did his Reserve duties as well??---where his base is (Johnstown,Pa) has a bunch of unionized guys and most are 'Rat' to the core (don't know any better)--you know how it goes--Dad was a 'rat'--Grandpa was a 'rat' and I will be a 'rat' till I die
casting that size 'net' would clean most of Congress out---that idea certainly would 'float my boat'
Why are you suspicious of his Purple Hearts?
No he's just an old fool that sold his honor and soul to the Devil.
