three times during the Iran-Iraq war of 1980-88, its streets filled with the corpses of Iranian child soldiers sacrificed in human-wave assaults; but in the end the Iranians expelled the invader at an awesome human cost.

Yea, whoop de doo. The American military is vastly superior to what Saddam had at the best of times.

How could an already undermanned American army expect to control such a huge territory?

Thats right Times UK, dream your little fantasies that America is tapped out.

We are not even close. This isn't piddly England.

And Iranian Mullahs.

You do the wrong thing with weapons, we get hit in this country again. Expect to be wiped off the face of he earth and nothing will stop that.

Iran is a major headache looking to get much bigger. Genuine fanatics. What to do? I wish I had access to good intelligence (no cute remarks thank you). Assuming we even have any decent intelligence coming out of the country. We have to do more than simply wait and see.

I think that an invasion of Iran would be a serious military error. Our military is pretty stretched. It is simply too small to be pursuing two wars. The amount of recycling of national guard and reservists is an indication that we do not have enough active duty personnel. Our standing army is too small. Iran is also a very different situation than Iraq. I haven't seen evidence that large numbers would welcome us as happened in Iraq. We could get bogged down in a serious war of attrition with a large portion of the civilian population actively supporting guerrilla warfare against us. In contrast to Iraq where the so called insurgents are not supported by the general population and in truth are not even home grown.

Iran is one hell of a problem, but it seems to me we would be better served by tactics such as fomenting unrest, sabotage and other options rather than a straightforward invasion.
