WOW, I am going to try this.. I see that WHITE CASTLE sells frozen hamburgers.. I tried them because I can't get them fresh in Houston.. and they aren't bad.. Thanks.. :)
My grandmother was from the Cincinnati area and had a traditional old German breakfast treat for us at holiday time:
Goetta
1 pound ground pork and 1 pound ground beef
8 cups water
2 1/2 cups steel cut oatmeal
1 large onion, chopped
4 bay leaves
2 teaspoons salt
2 tablespoons groung sage
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
Pinch of pepper
Boil the water in a large pot, add salt, pepper and oatmeal. Cover and let cook for 1 hour, stirring often.
Add the meat, onion and spices. Mix well. Cook for another 2 -3 hours stirring constantly. Remove bay leaf.
Pour into foil lined bread pans.
Refrigerate overnight.
To serve: Slice the goetta and fry it in a cast iron skillet or griddle until a thick crust froms on both sides and heated through. Served with eggs, pancakes in place of meat at brekfast.
We went up to see my husband's mom and she got to telling us about a bread pudding made with Crispy Creme donuts. It sounded delicious.
