It's a crime both horrific and crass — a welfare mother smothers her crying baby in his crib, dumps him in a trash bin, then continues to collect public assistance on him for the next 4 1/2 years.
That's the case that was laid out in Manhattan Supreme Court yesterday against Diatra Hester-Bey, charged killing 14-month-old Devon Rivers on Feb. 29, 2000. "She smothered his face in a pillow, and then left him for dead as she took a nap," in the West 41st Street Red Cross shelter where they lived, Assistant DA Andrew Seewald told jurors.
Later, she dressed the baby's corpse and took it in a carriage, by subway, to Queens, where she tossed it away like garbage.......
The body has never been found. She continued to collect welfare checks on Devon's behalf — just over $100 a month — and has been charged with manslaughter and grand larceny.
Hester-Bey, of Brownsville, Brooklyn, was only arrested after an August 2004 fight with a boyfriend, Robert Potter.....ratted Hester-Bey out on the alleged smothering.
Hester-Bey first told cops that the baby died in his crib, and that she abandoned his corpse, still in the stroller, in Queens. After some two days of questioning, Hester-Bey tearfully admitted to the smothering.............

Andrea Yates killed all of her children. Murdered them in cold blood. Is she part of the "me-first" culture too? Or do only black welfare mothers qualify for that? Is one murder more morally repugnant than another?
There are bad people everywhere, in all sorts of institutions. I don't think it reflects well on this site if certain groups are targeted for moral outrage, and others are ignored.

Yeah.... ummm... Andrea Yates didn't continue to collect welfare subsidies nor did she hold out in interrogation for 2 days insisting the kids died naturally. Andrea Yates was apparently severely deranged in a manner that does not discriminate along racial boundries. She also didn't continue to shack up with a guy who kept her "little secret" for years after the act either.

A small number of priests (indicative of the population at large) who molest children is hardly comparable to a mother that smothered her baby and dumped it in a garbage can.

I don't know about Rusty Yates, but Andrea certainly should have been. It was shocking how some people came to her defense. She was "off her meds." Boo hoo.

You see, that determination has to be made way of medical experts and the criminal justice system. If it is determined that she was anything less than severely deranged she should be executed post haste. From your posts it appears you may have been involved in the case.
OTOH, due to circumstances in my younger life, say 20-25 years ago I spent some time LIVING among the ghetto trash of America. As hard as it must be to comprehend this... there *IS* most definately a sub-set of people who actually...consciously... MAKE BABIES as an instrument to collect additional welfare money. I've seen it. I know the type. And the story of this welfare queen is 100% consistent with my own experiences.
