Former Clinton communications director-turned-ABC "This Week" host George Stephanopoulos charged Monday that President Bush deliberately hyped intelligence on Saddam Hussein's nuclear threat that he knew wasn't true.
"There's no question that the administration hyped the nuclear program," Stephanopoulos told radio host Don Imus. "Especially when they go out and say, you know, there could be a mushroom cloud coming from Iraq."
"They knew better than that," the one-time top Clinton aide declared.
In a nationally televised address on Oct 7, 2002, President Bush warned of "the threat gathering against us" from Iraq, adding: "Facing clear evidence of peril, we cannot wait for the final proof - the smoking gun - that could come in the form of a mushroom cloud."
Asked if he thought Bush had flat-out lied in statements like that, Stephanopoulos said Bush "certainly exaggerated beyond reason."
"I hate to use that word lying," he explained, since "there was some evidence on the other side. I just think they were willfully ignoring the counter-evidence."
The two men who led post-invasion WMD search teams, however, tend to side with the Bush White House on Saddam's nuclear threat.
Testifying in 2003 about suspicious activity at Iraq's al Tuwaitha nuclear weapons research facility, Iraq Survey Group Chief David Kay told Congress:
"[The Iraqis] started building new buildings, renovating it, hiring some new staff and bringing them together. And they ran a few physics experiments, re-ran experiments they'd actually run in the '80s."
"Given their history," said Kay, "it was certainly an emerging program that I would not have looked forward to their continuing to pursue."
Kay's successor, Charles Duelfer, also confirmed that weapons research at al Tuwaitha was continuing right up until the U.S. invasion, telling Congress in 2004 that Saddam's scientists were "preserving and expanding [their] knowledge to design and develop nuclear weapons."
One laboratory at al Tuwaitha, Duelfer said, "was intentionally focused on research applicable for nuclear weapons development."
I can't stand that little s%*t.
Stephanopoulos : in another language means Fudgepacker !
Isn't he sweet...?
Sure you do...
Does Stephie's mother still have to drive him to work?
(Jim was the first to call for the impeachment of Clinton. He did it on Jan. 20th, 1993, it may have been the next day but I think that it was the 20th.)
So Stephanapoulos has decided to join the great Democrat lying machine? Or did he ever leave?
1993-2001
George "Miss Molly" Stephanopoulos: In a nationally televised address on Oct 7, 2002, President Bush warned of "the threat gathering against us" from Iraq, adding: "Facing clear evidence of peril, we cannot wait for the final proof - the smoking gun - that could come in the form of a mushroom cloud."
Asked if he thought Bush had flat-out lied in statements like that, Stephanopoulos said Bush "certainly exaggerated beyond reason."
How about this, "Miss Molly": President Bush warns of "the threat gathering against us" from the Muslim world, adding: "Facing clear evidence of peril, we cannot wait for the final proof - the smoking gun - that could come in the form of an airliner plunged into an American scyscraper.
All I had to do was change a couple of words in Bush's "exaggerated beyond reason" statement.
So now it's clear: George Stephanopoulos advocates waiting until AFTER the suitcase nuke to take action, just as we waited until 3000 were dead on September 11, 2001. Freaking pillow-biting sissy.
Gads! The MSM trees are heavy with fruit today. Spin cycle coming!
Stephanie is using hyperbole to cast the aluminum rod and yellowcake uranium evidence as Bush claiming mushroom clouds would immediately be coming from Iraq. Bush never said that, and nobody truly believes that Saddam would not continue to present a nuclear threat if he remained in power today.
Throwing down this BS is like swatting at flies around the cow chip. Bush, Rove and the RNC need to bury the damn "Bush lied" cow chip, or throw a few more "Clinton lied" and "Kerry lied" chips in until the lying game stinks up America so much it isn't politically productive to play it.
steponallofus--the Poison Dwarf.
FEB. 17, 1998 SPEECH TO THE PENTAGON --
Clinton furthered explained that:
Iraq "admitted, among other things, an offensive biological warfare capability, notably, 5,000 gallons of botulinum, which causes botulism; 2,000 gallons of anthrax; 25 biological-filled Scud warheads; and 157 aerial bombs. And I might say UNSCOM inspectors believe that Iraq has actually greatly understated its production. . . .
"Over the past few months, as [the weapons inspectors] have come closer and closer to rooting out Iraq's remaining nuclear capacity, Saddam has undertaken yet another gambit to thwart their ambitions by imposing debilitating conditions on the inspectors and declaring key sites which have still not been inspected off limits . . . .
"It is obvious that there is an attempt here, based on the whole history of this operation since 1991, to protect whatever remains of his capacity to produce weapons of mass destruction, the missiles to deliver them, and the feed stocks necessary to produce them. The UNSCOM inspectors believe that Iraq still has stockpiles of chemical and biological munitions, a small force of Scud-type missiles, and the capacity to restart quickly its production program and build many, many more weapons. . . .
"Now, let's imagine the future. What if he fails to comply and we fail to act, or we take some ambiguous third route, which gives him yet more opportunities to develop this program of weapons of mass destruction and continue to press for the release of the sanctions and continue to ignore the solemn commitments that he made? Well, he will conclude that the international community has lost its will. He will then conclude that he can go right on and do more to rebuild an arsenal of devastating destruction. And some day, some way, I guarantee you he'll use the arsenal. . . .
Stephanopolous should be an expert on misleading people. He was a key player in misleading the voters about Bill Clinton's numerous affairs with various women. The most prevalent one being Jenifer Flowers. He knew that she was telling the truth and that Clinton was lying. He probably arranged the famous 60 Minutes appearance of Bill and Hillary that created enough koolaid drinkers for Bill to win the election. But true to form Bill couldn't contain himself even in the Oval Office and even with a woman young enough to be his daughter. And true to form, Stephanopolous continued follow him around with the toilet tissue to clean up Bill's messes. Now Stephie thinks that he is a serious journalist. What a joke. He remains a serious Democrat and nothing more.
LOL, Eleanor certainly looks sick in that one!!
Good analysis. Between the time that Pres.Bush went to the UN and the actual war began, Saddam and his minions (helped by the French, Germans, & Russians) had six months to bury and transport out WMD evidence. Meanwhile WMDs and material to make WMDs have been found in Iraq. Why isn't that acknowledged clearly by the Bush Administration? Why aren't they straightening out the Public on these lies told by the MSM and the Dems. Very confusing, frustrating, sickening.
Is That Elanor (needs her) Clift diddled? Sorry, there are some things nobody is willing to do, at any price. But, I'll bet its the only way she can wipe the scowl off her face.
