CBS and Rather built an empire on lies just like the one which Mapes propagates.

Jim, you must be proud of your creation. Always imitated, never duplicated, and what a difference you have made in this country.

I used to take the Dallas Times Herald...then it went out of business...just like the city is, in certain ways.

That is how I learned about Free Republic...was the Rathergate scandal...

Anyplace that busted that hack...was where I wanted to be!

Don't you think the scheduling of radio talk shows in Dallas really stinks???

Cutting him off for hockey sucks too.

Mapes was just trying to make a name for herself, the same way that her mentor, Rather, did.
In 1988, just before the election, Rather aired a one hour "documentary", The Wall Within. This was a story of six Vietnam vets who were haunted by the unspeakable atrocities that they had committed in Vietnam.
In 1998, B.G.Burkett (no,not that Burkett) published his book, Stolen Valor. Burkett tracked down these six "vets" and proved that only one had even been to Vietnan, and that one had not seen any combat. Burkett confronted Rather and Rather said, "we stand by the story".

Mapes was simply following her mentor's example.

Forged documents....forged documentaries....whats the difference?

I am glad you mentioned her "private life"...why was she using her kid like she did??? It was almost like she was holding him in front of herself....to keep from getting hit!

And, you are correct about Freepers...they don't put up with ANYONE trying to "get by with anything"...they sniff out a troll at the first post!

Let me get this straight...I can say anything I woant without proof, as long as many others have done similar things in the past, and I am to be believed and not questioned in spite of it all.

And it is for others to prove me wrong.

Edward R. Murrow, where are you?

Let's here from Walter Cronkite on this one. Is this how nhe vetted the stories he told while covering Viet Nam? The first manned moon landing?

Masybe there really wasn't a Viet Nam, and we didn't land on the moon...I guess its up to me as a viewer to verify all of this...

ROSS: Have they proved to be authentic, though? Isn't that really what journalists do?

MAPES: No, I don't think that's the standard.

We knew MSMs standards were low. The only surprise was how low.

"Not the standard?" Good! We can have a ball writting letters to the local fishwarps, informing them that due to their "standard" we do not see the need to buy their paper. Also inform them "it's a done deal ala Mapes and you do NOT have any right to an opinion otherwise." "And make damn sure sure you get it straight!"

I still can't get over how early excerpts of her book kept ranting on about "peripheral spacing."

Get out! That's hilarious.

It' easy to see why they want a law to let them shield their "sources". It's so they can INVENT SOURCES!!!!!

48 weeks...

I met my husband on Memorial Day....we were married the Thanksgiving weekend of that same year...

That was 33 years ago...he had just come back from Vietnam..and we are still best friends.

BUT, you and cyborg sound like your relationship is very strong...and different beginnings don't mean the endings won't be just as happy!
