French to Impose Curfews, Deploy Forces

PARIS - Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin said Monday that curfews would be imposed wherever they are needed and 9,500 police officers and gendarmes are being deployed to stop rioting that has spread across France.

"Wherever it is necessary, prefects will be able to put in place a curfew under the authority of the interior minister(Sarkozy), if they think it will be useful to permit a return to calm and ensure the protection of residents. That is our number one responsibility," Villepin said on TF1 television.

Sarkozy ain't going anywhere, and it seems he may have won the battle with chirac/de villepin, except de villepin gets to have his face on TV.

Thx for the report on Villepin. He's just what one would expect of a former diplomat. He wants to negotiate a settlement with terrorists.
