I heard an explaination from a WWII veteran:

All of the brave souls in France died in WWII...this left only the genes of cowards to be reproduced.

You mean, most of the brave ones died in WW I---and only a few remained who fought hard in WW II? And even most of them are gone?

France's problem from 1870 to 1919 was not lack of courage. Quite the contrary, they elevated "elan" to ridiculous levels over common sense and tactical understanding. They they swung 180 degrees the other way. But the French army at Dienbienphu and in Algeria gave em hell. I'd get in a foxhole with those guys any day.

They had a 'head' start. Anyone who could think independently was eliminated during the french revolution.
