You have to admit this article is an improvement. They are now mentioning "Muslim" in the 5th paragraph (as opposed to the last) and for the first time I saw "Islamic militants", even though they stuck it near the end.

You make a great point: it would be as if, in the 1920s, the media had referred to Klansmen as "youths" or "disenfranchised whites" instead of racist terrorists that they were.
Time to start calling these "youts" what they really are.
