For sure.
What concerns me is the percentage of conservatives here on Free Republic who simply take so-called "good news" at face value. As we see, what is presented to us often is quite different once you hose away the BS.
The reason we have judge Alito up for a SCOTUS nomination is NOT because of President Bush, but because conservative activists held Bush accountable for a very bad pick, we voiced our outrage, and the result was that it was the conservative activists who have placed a fine man like Alito in the position of a SCOTUS confirmation hearing, not President Bush.
When news first broke of this "$35 billion cut" conservatives' first reaction should have been to question the accuracy, then research and verify that what we are being told is true, especially after the ludicrous Miers pick. Instead, if you read this thread, many here simply took it at face value that "cuts have been made."
Bad move. Why have they not learned? Unless you independently verify so-called "good news", you usually end up being disappointed 48 hours later when conservative national columnists start having their columns appear or they start showing up on TV and then you start seeing the real deal behind these types of things as the columnists start going over details, like I did in post #165.
A great lesson learned with the Miers/Alito episode is that when you question what the Republicans are doing, and you show outrage at their attempt to pull wool over your eyes, we sometimes can change the course of history, like we did by getting Sam Alito up for confirmation hearings.
Yes, we conservative activists changed the course of history. We did it by questioning, by investigating, then by showing our outrage. The same thing should be done here with his so-called "cut" that is NOT a cut but an increase.
Trust, but verify!!!!! Observe, but research!!!!!

It's not so surprising really. There are conservatives. Then there are Republicans who think they're conservatives. Then there are some who fawn over our president like blushing giggling schoolgirls, much like the average Dim voter when Xlinton was in office.
Adherence to principle or party or personality. On a given issue, you can fit everyone into these categories.
In the Good Old Days at FR, it was so much simpler. Everyone hated Xlinton and the Dims. But now, when the GOP pulls the same stuff that would previously have elicited howls of outrage at FR, some people actually start cheering them on.

Like DontTread, I was a little disturbed by the number who thought this was a great budget cut. But then I looked at all the folks whose instincts correctly told them that this is a sham 'cut' that hides the real increase in spending. And a few like DontTread who started digging out the facts to present what these 'cuts' really are.
