Maryland has had problems with MTBE (Methy Tertiary-Butyl Ether) leaking from storage tanks at many gas stations. I'm not sure why they add it to the gas, I'm guessing it is due to environmental regulations which would be kind of ironic.
California has the same problem. Now, their state both requires MTBE and bans it. Guess that's typical in CA.....
