ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) -- In a major victory for Merck & Co., a jury has found the drugmaker properly warned consumers about Vioxx risks. The finding means Merck will not be held liable for the 2001 heart attack suffered by a man taking the painkiller.

So I can finally see an end to all the trial lawyer commercials urging any and everyone who has used VIOXX to call them to reap the rewards?

i was under the impression these drugs hyped up the occurrence of stroke, not heart attack.

If someone is prone to a blood clot in the brain, they also have the increased risk for same in the coronary vessels.

Don't know why you had the impression the trial lawyers would leave any ailment off their lottery list.

Man you guys are doctrine pure. Everything EVERYTHING fits into your neat little construct. It's like listening to a strict adherant to Islam, I swear. Doctrinally pure people make mistakes too. And when they miss the mark, they miss it by a mile. Some people got hurt by Vioxx. The way drug companies pump product before adequate testing is pretty dispicable. Havind said that, drug companies perform miracle when they get it right. It's a balancing act. My father in law took Vioxx and suffered a massive stroke. We never looked to make a dime off it because he was already over 80. Doh, people don't live forever. Just hated to see him suffer.

What is unsettling is this blind allegiance to a drug company, simply because it is the 'conservative way' to be.

What's unsettling is the current atmosphere of someone MUST be to blame for one's misfortunes - to the tune of $$$billions. I see no one here with a blind allegiance to any one drug company. It's the issue of "I can't make my own decisions for my health care because of fear of a lawsuit".

My husband was a pharmacist and is now a physician. He knows the data. He has prescribed these nonsteroidals for years. He should be able to prescribe what he feels will best benefit his patient, in consultation with the patient. If the patient is fully informed of the risks and benefits associated with a particular medication, then it should be available. Why should the few deaths by those taking this medication (at high, long term doses) affect the millions of people who took it without incident? How many 19 year olds have died of alcohol related deaths? Should we remove all alcoholic products from the market? The government can't save us from everything. There comes a time when enough is enough.

Re 19 year olds and alcohol deaths, you aren't being advised to drink alcohol and drive. In fact you are strongly advised not to do this. When a doctor says take this for your pain, that's advice. strong advice. Your comparing apples and martians.

Your small mind just can't grasp that an 80+ yo could have a cerebrovascular accident unrelated to meds. Thus, you lash out to health care providers in your ignorant anger. Color me unimpressed.

Funny how the two people on this thread presenting the least amount of facts are the ones accusing everybody else of being motivated by doctrine.

Why are opiates still on the market? How many have died or become addicted to this prescribed medication (although the legal community has made serious attemps to punish docs who prescribe it - screw those suffering from intractable pain) Let's add insulin - too much and you're in a coma. Without it, you're in a coma - gee, guess they're still working on that angle. Heck, let's add Tylenol to the mix. Too much and your liver is shot. Let's pull that from the market. Should I sue my mother because she made me eat meat and she salted my food? Now I have high cholesterol and hypertension. Do we outlaw salt and beef? Where does the madness stop?

I suggest you open a PDR and look up ANY medication. Look at the listing of side effects. They ALL have them. The human body is not like a car where you change a part and it runs. Everyone reacts differently to particular medications.

The fact remains - There are those out to make a buck on other's misfortunes, and play the blame game. The average Joe is who suffers the consequences.

"Unfortunately this was the weakest of the cases so far. The guy had his heart attack less than 2 months of taking the drug, its hard to find fault other than with the user on this one."

The time doesn't matter in this decision, the fact that the jury found the warnings sufficient is the key, it sets a precedence for other cases no matter how long you took it. What this really means is the shysters will go after the individual Dr's now for not warning the patient of the risks that they were told of by the manufacture. The scumbags will get their money one way or another out of the system, just watch.

One question - are you afilliated with an HMO? Or are you in private solo practice?

I have arthritis of the spine. Vioxx worked so well for me. I hurt everyday, but some days worse then others. Those bad days were better because of Vioxx. Now I just take aspirin.
