KABUL: A Japanese artist is to recreate Afghanistan`s destroyed Bamiyan Buddhas using dozens of laser beam images.

Hiro Yamagata says the £34m project will also create electricity for local people.

The 1,500-year Buddhas were carved into sandstone cliffs but were destroyed in 2001 by the Taliban regime for being "un-Islamic".

The project will see the Buddhas recreated using 240 laser beam images, 120 laser systems, 10 windmills and 11,988 solar energy panels.

It is hoped the hi-tech project could turn the area into a tourist attraction and reinvigorate the local economy, which has been ruined by years of war.

Mr Yamagata plans to show the images for two hours from sunset four days per week.

He is still in negotiation with the Afghan government and local entities on how long the exhibition will last but it is likely to be for years, he said.

What a silly idea...

For 34 million pounds, one would think that the original statues could be physically recreated, instead of mimicking them with ephemeral high-tech gee-wizardry that can vanish overnight, the way most technically-dependent things seem to do in islamic third world countries. as an aside, I don't believe anything permanent will ever happen here. Islam is not prone to retreat unless overwhelming and irresistable force is used, which I don't see happening over "mere" statues.

Neat. Now let him put up holographic Twin Towers at Ground Zero so that those of us who want to see the towers again can, those who say that no one will ever rent there again will be right, and those who don't want anything built there can have win the day. It's a twin win-win-win!
