Well a plea to a misdemanor is almost like pleading guilty to speeding and paying your fine in traffic court. It's very close to a complete victory. I think it's mainly a face-saving deal with a prosecutor who has a weak case (unless you're Sandy Berger and The Powers That Be drop a strong case and decide to let you off with a misdemeanor).
