Hurricane Wilma slowly drifts toward the Southeast Gulf of Mexico after relentlessly pounding Cozumel and Cancun for more than 24 hours. Early reports indicate extensive wind and flood damage to Mexico's resort-studded Mayan Riviera. Mexican officials said about 20,000 tourists were at shelters and hotels on the mainland south of Cancun and an estimated 10,000-12,000 were in Cancun itself. About 50 hotels were evacuated.
In preparation for Hurricane Wilma's anticipated Florida landfall, a Hurricane Watch and mandatory evacuation have been issued for the Florida Keys and Florida Bay. Mandatory evacuations for Marco Island and much of Naples are in effect, as well as high surf advisories and high risk of rip currents along Florida's panhandle and Big Bend coasts. Bus services are available for Monroe Co. and other counties for residents who do not have transportation. Additional storm watches for the Florida peninsula are expected later today.
The 2005 hurricane season altered the record books again today with the formation of Tropical Storm Alpha south of Hispanola. Preliminary forecasts indicate TS Alpha will not affect the U.S. mainland.

Her eye is so big, we're gonna get smacked bad even if we're not in the eyewall. The core of hurricane force winds will cover the entire southern part of the peninsula, from Palm Beach to the south. Her windfield is enormous.
Anybody have a scanner up yet for Collier or Key west??

The thing about that phrase is this: After Rita, on the Saturday morning when we crawled out of our "fortress" after being pounded to hell and back all night, my brother took a walk down the road. Later he came back with an interesting story from his neighbor... something about how Shep Smith (or it may have been the CNN guy in town) had been at the local high school a few miles from us where most of the emergency services people from Beaumont and all towns southward were gathered. When someone in the crowd suggested, "Let's all go hunker down at my house" (paraphrasing), the Yankee news guy looked at the man as if he didn't know what the heck he meant.
Basically, I was just wondering if they're now all using that phrase to laugh at Bubba.

Look at the 24/12Z position. The inner ring is hurricane-force winds. Amazing. The extent of hurricane-force winds is not as wide as Katrina yet, but the extent of TS-force winds and 12 ft. seas is very similar to Katrina just prior to landfall.
laz... I don't know if this will help you. When we got "caught" by Rita, we had bagged up 3 sets of dry clothes each to have right there with us. Went through all of them the day the storm hit. We also had stuff (snacks, breakfast, lunch, supper, drinks) pre-sorted. What sort of communication do you have if cells, etc, go out?
