As soon as she got home, the phone was ringing. She answered and the vet told her she was in danger and to get out of the house. (He didn't tell her the dog was choking on human fingers). The vet had called the police. They later found a burglar in her upstairs closet, shaking with fear, bleeding to death, with three missing fingers!

In the early 1800s, John Bell moved his family from North Carolina to the Red River bottomland in Robertson County, Tennessee, settling in a community that later became known as Adams. Bell purchased some land and a large log home for his family. The Bells quickly made many friends and gained prominence in the community. John Bell acquired additional land and cleared a number of fields over the next several years.
One day in 1817, John Bell was inspecting his corn field when he encountered a strange-looking animal sitting in the middle of a corn row. Shocked by the appearance of this animal, which had the body of a dog and the head of a rabbit, Bell shot several times to no avail. The animal vanished. Bell thought nothing more about the incident--at least not until after dinner. That evening, the Bells began hearing "beating" sounds on the outside walls of their house.

How did I miss this thread?? It must have got buried with other pings. Going back to read from the start!
Years ago I had some friends who rented a house in an old but upscale neighborhood in Kansas City. This house was old, built in the 1880's or so and was on the local historical register. The orginal owner of the house was a prominent Kansas City/Jackson County judge. The house itself was called a mansion in the old days, three stories with many rooms complete with servants entrance and servants staircase in the back. It had a basement, unfurnished and looked like and outright catacomb because the walls and were made of lumpy and chipped mortar. There was also an entrance from the outside with one of those old swinging upright doors, but it was barred shut and welded.
The house had a bad incident happen in the past where the gardener of the judge murdered a servant of one of the neighbors because he was involved in a love affair.
Anyway, the owner who rented the house was a lawyer who told my friends that he and his wife had many odd occurances in the house and even called in a medium. The medium told them that there were 2 spirits in the house - a bad one of the gardener and a good one being the judges wife. The lawyer claimed that he had actually seen the judges wife ghostly form on the 3rd floor.
My friends had numerous experieces. Many times small objects seemed to move around from where they were placed. There were frequent bumps in the night. One time it was so loud that it woke them up and they got their guns out and found the basement door open - which was nearly impossible since the door to the outside was still welded shut and the bolt was one the interior of the house.
I was there once for a party and a couple times one of the lights in the creepy basement came on, even after we had gone down there to shut it off.
Ghosts? Ee-yeah. How can you people believe this nonsense? Dead is dead, folks, and I'm not being flippant here, but the souls of the departed either walk through the Pearly Gates or get fitted for asbestos union suits. The idea of spectral weirdos wandering around old houses rattling chains and saying "BOO" to the buyers of their former places of address...Jeez. Well, you'll have to pardon me, I have to get back to planet Reality now...
Interesting ghost hunter article

Bump for tomorrow
Bump. I love this thread!
We were visiting the Washington memorial back in 1964 on a family vacation. My mother, who was extremely overweight, was wearing a somewhat formal black dress, as many ladies wore in such dignified places back then. She had already been complaining about being out of breath that morning since we had already done so much walking. But as my sister and me kept begging her to walk up to the top with us, some young girl about 9 or so came out of the crowd, grabbed my mother's hand and begged her not to go inside. She then ran off into the crowd.
This scared my mother so much, that she sat down on a bench to gather her wits. Needless to say, she didn't leave that bench until we headed back to the hotel. Mother has always speculated that this was her guardian angel. It sure was a strange thing though.
A few years ago I was working the latenight shift and there were only two of us in the office on one particular night. I finished what I was doing and was getting ready to leave for the night, so I stopped by the nearby office of the other person in the building to say goodnight. As I was just getting ready to leave, we both heard a real loud THUD from another nearby room. I looked at her and asked if anybody else was there at the time. She said "NO, but I heard that too!" We both took off running to the room where the sound came from. When we entered the room, nothing/nobody was there, nor was anything laying on the floor that might have fallen to cause such a loud noise. In the days that followed other co-workers shared stories about feeling they were being watched at different times.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
