Bill Cosby exhorts parents to set goals for their children

COMPTON, Calif. - Actor and comedian Bill Cosby used humor to spread a message of responsibility and self-improvement to residents in this crime-plagued and largely minority city, challenging parents to set goals for their children that will keep them away from gangs and drugs.

Cosby's visit to Compton High School on Wednesday, where he spoke to several gatherings of students, parents and teachers, is part of a national tour he hopes will bring a message of hope and accountability to the black community.

"Somebody said 'I'm either flippin' burgers or sellin' some drugs," said Cosby, echoing a common complaint of young people in poor communities. "But people flippin' burgers never seem to say 'I want to be the manager of the burger place.'"

The Black community no matter how much they might AGREE with you-- feels that the White community has NO right to critise them.Being a Son of the South, who am I to blame them?

I just had to agree with both of you. You brought up memories of how funny that album was and how it fit in with the way things were back then and what made us laugh.

But why is it when a white person says these types of things, we're called a racist?

Because it's easier to sling names than to actually wash, feed, clothe, educate, discipline and provide an intact home for your children. They are taking the path of least resistance. If they accept Cosby's words then the responsibility to actually DO SOMETHING becomes theirs - and they don't want that. They want a boatload of excuses.
