Your "Enemies List" is growing pretty long here.
In order for you to maintain your level of cognitive dissonance and support this pick you're going to have to add most every conservative voice by the time this thing is done.

In the end, its just going to be you, Bush, Andy Card, James Dobson, and a handful of lingering sycophants.

Miers will be confirmed by the same # as Roberts, perhaps larger.

Not a chance. Every single Democrat is going to find reason to vote against her. Bush has given a plethora of options here.
Will it be:
Her abortion stance?
Lack of qualification?
Refusal to release documents?
Separation of Powers concerns?
General unimpressive performance?
Gross incompetence?

And believe me, a number of Republicans will join them, since there is no real support for this nomination among their own constituencies.

If I were a disinterested observer, as I am when watching extreme cage fighting, and wanted to see blood for the sake of seeing blood, then I'd want to see the hearings. Instead, I am and have always been a strong supporter of President Bush. For that very reason I profoundly hope either he will withdraw Miers' nomination or, far better, that she will withdraw out of her alleged loyalty for him.

Otherwise, this thing is going to be a total catastrophe. The DemonRats aren't even going to have to try to Bork her. All they'll have to do is display her abysmally diminishing list of qualifications. Once that's happened, they'll use it to smear President Bush for sending up such a "horribly unqualified crony." That being stuck to him, there won't be much left of the administration and his presidency.

The only way out of this vile, squalid mess is for her to BAIL NOW.

I love George. He's a good man, but he's a human being and needs help like any man from time to time.

An intervention is necessary. Some wise reasonable voices need to speak to the President about what's going on, the damage done to the party, etc. They need to spell out the consequences to his second term agenda and the elections.

Then they need to urge the President to pull the plug on this one. He'll tell Harriet, she will be a loyal soldier and withdraw her name. Bush will pick a winner and begin to stop the damage.

I wouldn't bet on Dobson going down with the ship.

My prediction...Miers passes with 53 of 55 R votes and 10 of 45 D votes...63-37.

Republican defectors Arlen Spector, Lincoln Chafee.

I have more faith in Bush than I have in the whole dam senate.

Bush gave them an easy out on this one. They can oppose her without seeming the least bit partisan, or unfair as they can easily cite concerns shared by most conservative commentators and senators in voting against her. They can easily vote against her experience and qualifications and pretend ideology has nothing to do with it (which it does). There might even be some spillover where some of their prior unfair opposition to nominees begins to look more legitimate thank to the Miers nomination. I'd have liked a much stronger nominee like Roberts so the dems would be forced to either vote yes, or to vote no with the whole world knowing that they were voting no not because of the nominees qualifications but because of the nominees political beliefs.
