LOL! We made gumbo, too, after Rita. And even tried deep frying a roast... ugggh. Beef jerky gone bad! However, we deep fried a pork roast and made Cuban Sandwiches that turned out great... was a real treat considering we were trapped in a fishing camp we evacated to that got hit worse than our home. First time in over 20 years we've been "caught" by a hurricane. {{grrrumble}}

Pinellas County had Red Tide this year and tourism has taken a beating as a result. There is a dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico outside of Pinellas Cty. The tourist councils didn't inform Florida's customers of the outbreak. Not telling people (tourists with money to burn) the truth is wrong.

I have said that Florida must be punished but I didn't mean by mother nature. I like having a roof.

I didn't have to do an organized boycott of Florida because things are so haywire down here, there was no need to. You brought up Terri Schiavo, not I. God Bless Her.

Perhaps you should ask Floriduh to apoligize for this, as I find it spiteful, as well as inappropriate.

Jeb still doesn't get it, does he? I said the day that Terri died, "Florida must be punished." I haven't had to do a thing - no organized boycott was ever required. Mother Nature's taken care of everything. So far Pinellas County has not gotten a direct hit. It's been very lucky hurricane wise.

Red Tide did happen here. Mine is about the Gulf of Mexico and the dead zone from the Red Tide. weather-related. tourism is off. Mother Nature.

Try conservababe. She brought up TS.

Wilma looks really bad and they are now saying by Saturday night.

I found these to be perfect for hurricane supplies:

Wolfgang Puck will market self-heating gourmet coffee cans

Naaa....any grizzled FL Hurricane Veteran knows how to make great coffee on the propane grill. Hint: Use the gold plated permanent filter rather than the paper ones.

I use the coffee press. That way, just have to boil water.

The Wolfgang Puck self-heating latte cans sell at Kroger individually for $2.25, but I've read that they can also be purchased by the case for less. I found them quite handy during Hurricane Rita.

Today Governor Bush said "Why us?"

I'd have no problem if Jeb Bush became the head of FEMA. His "Why us?" must have been taken out of context because we've been through this so many times since he took office.

Oh yeah, cooking in the rough. I'm a fairly decent campground cook myself, a talent that comes in handy during post-hurricane power outages. The Sunday after Charley hit I went down to the local Wal Mart to buy ice and other stuff. I'd fixed myself a nice bacon and egg breakfast on my Coleman stove prior to leaving, and carried a big travel mug full of steaming hot coffee with me to work on while standing in line.

Over this camping season I intend to reacquaint myself with dutch oven cooking. When I was a kid and we went camping, my mother would fix stews, ham and beans, roasts, etc. in the dutch oven. She'd put the ingredients into the pot, place it on a charcoal bed and cover the lid with charcoal, and then we'd go off and sightsee, swim, goof off or whatever, come back to camp in the evening, and sit down to some of the best food you've ever had.

I use a Revereware percolator that's probably older than I am on a camp stove. Makes a great cup of coffee.

Maybe after it passes over Cuba's western side it will go north, regain strength, and turn southeast to slam Cuba again. Hopefully, it will pass over Cuba, gain strength, and turn north to slam Cuba again.

Fantasy...?

Krogers... I shop there and have never seen them! I will have to "look" for them... in the coffee isle, right? During Rita, I had my coffee creamer in the 6 gallon water cooler... floating on top. Wolfgang Puck latte self-heating would be better... for lots of reasons!
