God's purposes are good, that is the classical Western understanding.

Actually that isn't an understanding. It is a definition. Good is whatever God does. Whatever God does is Good. No matter how evil it seems to people, like committing terracide.

Well, sometimes definitions are part of our understanding of things. Some quibble to say that what is good is prior to God, but I think we've been there already (5th c. BC). All the same, the classical Western understanding is that God's purposes are good.

BTW, Odysseus isn't guilty for being mean to the Cyclops, neither are judges indicted for being just.
