I don't think Bush was even aware of Miers' past donations to Gore and Dukakis in 1988 because they put out a press release that Miers voted for Reagan and Bush41 before they were aware of the 1988 contributions. She will be forced to answer for these contributions and assertions of support for Reagan and Bush41, during her confirmation hearings.
It seems incredible that Bush wouldn't know but he relies on people like Andrew Card and Harriet Miers on these matters. If CBS hadn't posted the phony NG documents, the White House would have continued under the impression that those documents were real and they probably would have lost the election to Kerry.
You know, I hadn't thought of that possibility. But it doesn't seem far fetched. Absent an outcry from the 2nd (or 3rd) tier media, the phony story would have kept riding along. I don't think the WH has a mechanism to defuse a run amok press. Or if it does, it doesn't use it.
Law firms donate to every candidate. Where these direct donations or generated from her firm?
Miers was cohead of a law firm and the law firm may have deemed it necessary for their business to make political contributions to the Democrats back when Texas was solidly run by Democrats (before George W. Bush changed the lay of the land in Texas).
So, my question is, were these donations made by her law firm, or at the behest of her law firm so the money donated could be hard money, or were they made by her personally from internal conviction?
