What you don't seem to understand is that people of faith--like myself--believe that voting for a leftist candidate is material cooperation with evil. We cannot do it because it is sinful. It is not so much a statement to party leaders as an attempt to avoid sin.

Leaving the Party, or casting your vote for a candidate who has no chance of wining amounts to guaranteeing victory for the leftier of the (supposedly) leftist candidates.
You still sin, but you feel better about it because you can lie to yourself and claim that you had anything to do with it.
