The Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 pretty much started the road to illegality. It was passed because Dupont needed a market for it's new synthetic fiber known as Nylon.
They had to "remove" the competition>>>Hemp fiber.
They did that buy spending lots of cash on Congress Critters who whipped up hysteria about blacks smoking it and raping white girls.

I keep seeing these posts by the dopers but I have never seen any substantiation of them ...

"MJ was legal before the 1930s, before they passed racist laws from fears of black jazz musicians"

***Yeah, the Hearst-DuPont conspiracy. I know about it.

***For some time now I've been a STAUNCH advocate of legalizing the domestic production of Hemp. Afterall, I am an Agrarian conservative/libertarian. That is not my political party designation, but my free-thinking philosophy - my personal and independent objectivism, so to speak.
I belong to a group that lobbies our state to legalize Hemp production. BUT, Hemp ain't Marijuana and does NOT have the psychotropic properties of MJ. The MJ and Hemp plants are almost identical in appearance and, unfortunately, THAT fact is one of the major objections to legalizing Hemp's cultivation.
I have oftened speculated on the prohibition link, with the alcohol crowd. Joe Kennedy, a known illicit drug importer (booze), during prohibition was granted some powerful importing rights, to Scotch whiskey, and other products. He had lots of friends in power. Link that with others (DuPont, etal), with a desire to see the marijuana market suppressed, and you may see some light at causation for making it illegal.
I have personal experience, and join that to many others, to debunk most of the "theories" about pot. I know too many successful people who use, or have used marijuana, in great quantity, and with extended durations. They are all successful. I don't know if the pot helped it, but they surely don't appear harmed, in any way. Most, started careers with nothing, but their brains, and abilities... and smoked pot all the while. Many still do, and they are in their 40's-60's. One friend is 73, and started smoking to help him eat, following chemotherapy. He found other values to it, as well. He is able to sleep, with less waking periods of pain. But, that is not my argument, here.
I have known some other pot smokers, who did not do so well. But, it wasn't the pot, that has kept them down. They just didn't have what it takes, to begin with. Nothing can help that... or harm that! That's just the way life is.
Just my opinion... and an empirical report, on the experiential usage of marijuana.
