Not only did the Angels players start walking off the field, I thought I saw A.J. Pierzinski (sp?) walk towards the dugout before turning suddenly and running towards first- he even believed that he was out at first.

He did not hear the *out* call, thats why he started running.

Your interpretation is incorrect. AJ faked out the catcher - he made the move towards his dugout to GET AROUND the catcher, and when he saw the catcher start walking away he turned and ran...
