I never bought any of their stuff because our daughter didn't particularly like them, and I wasn't going to spend that much on a doll, anyway. ;o)

For those of you who are looking for an alternative to the AG dolls now; I just received an email from a friend at church about another source for dolls and books. She said she orders dolls and books that are similar to AG's from Vision Forum's Beautiful Girlhood Collection. I checked it out and they are really nice, although they do not carry as big an inventory as AG yet. They are about the same on pricing.

So American Girls is NOT supporting abortion rights, right?

Of course they are...through their donations to GirlsInc.

Hey China, You were definitely onto something here...thanks for posting...I hadn't noticed this and am glad you brought it to my attention so I could research and post the facts.

Lurking...I posted you first on this notice, since you were the most forceful in claiming this a gossip thread.

I assure you, it is not gossip.

Here is the proof you sought:

Press Releases "American Girl Encourages Girls to Tell the World "I Can"
http://www.americangirl.com/corp/media/2005/0822ican.html

This page summarizes the new "I Can" program. Halfway through the release is this paragraph:

“We’re excited about the opportunity to align ourselves with American Girl,” says Joyce Roche, president and CEO of Girls Inc. “Our Girls Inc. Girls’ Bill of Rights states that girls ‘have the right to express themselves with originality and enthusiasm,’ and the ‘I CAN’ program complements this right by encouraging girls to dream big, achieve their goals, and make a difference in the world.”

Voila - proof American Girl is "aligned" with Girls Inc.

From the www.girlsinc.org website:
http://www.girlsinc.org/ic/intro.php
President's statement:

"Recently, our mission to help girls develop their self-esteem and self-reliance has become the target of false, inflammatory statements from people who are pursuing a narrow political agenda."

Action Alert - Info on bill for Funding Abstinence Only Programs: http://www.capwiz.com/girls/issues/votes/?votenum=379&chamber=H&congress=1071

The amendment was defeated. Girls Inc. made this official statement: "Girls Inc. opposed this amendment."

And this: "Girls Have the Right to Accept and Appreciate and Their Bodies"
http://www.girlsinc.com/ic/page.php?id=4.3.4

We all agree with the above statement, but then there's this from the same page:

"To make responsible decisions about sexuality, pregnancy and parenthood, girls need and have a right to sensitive, truthful sexuality education; convenient access to safe, effective methods of contraception and protection from disease; and referral to comprehensive information, counseling, clinical and other services that support their responsible decisions. We recognize that any sizable group of girls includes those who face issues related to their sexual orientation or that of a family member and who face discrimination based on this sexual orientation. Girls have a right to positive, supportive environments and linkages to community resources for dealing with issues of sexual orientation."

And here is the support of Roe v. Wade:

"We recognize the right of all women to choose whether, when, and under what circumstances to bear children. Reproductive freedom and responsibility are essential to other rights and opportunities, including pursuit of education, employment, financial security and a stable and fulfilling family life. Restrictions of reproductive choice are especially burdensome for young women and poor women. Girls Incorporated supports a woman’s freedom of choice, a constitutional right established by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1973 in Roe vs. Wade."

FYI for all:

The New York Post picked up this story today. See the above statement from the Pres. of GirlInc. Trying to hide the truth.

Altruistic virtues - are not abortion on demand and contraceptives DO NOT empower young girls.

This is October...the Christmas/Hannukah season is upon us...

I feel that protests from those of us who do not support this policy might be very effective at this time....
