what i was thinking is that he has a new chief that is a great thinker and now he has a somewhat unknown whom he feels shares his conservative views and he knows her personally, and the left cant block her because it knows nothinig about her. SO I feel its a rather smart play to shape the court for the next decade or so after the leadership of the new chief justice roberts. If Roberts is the man all conservatives believe him to be then Miers will be persuaded by their opinions on imprtant matters that come before the court in the future . I think its genius play if you believe that the basis of Miers faith is genuine the conservatives should Trust GW with this nomination.
Welcome to FreeRepublic... where paragraphs are your friends.
"When we find that issue," Mr. Bush told the party faithful, "I'll just walk up to Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid and spit in his eye."
Actually, we all hope he is a great thinker in the right ways...which I'm more sure of than with the present nominee.
and now he has a somewhat unknown
It would be hard to be any more unknown than she is. To the best of my knowledge, she's made no attempt to engage in the national debate on constitutional matters except 2nd Amendment.
whom he feels shares his conservative views
Feelings. How about evidence? And evidence that she won't change? Haven't seen her take a single bullet for proper judicial principles.
and he knows her personally,
A likable lady, I'm sure. But can she articulate the arguments needed to shift the nation's legal culture? If she can, why has she never cared enough to do so?
and the left cant block her because it knows nothinig about her.
The left would be silly to block her. She is the best they will ever get out of the current situation. Think Souter.
SO I feel its a rather smart play to shape the court for the next decade or so
What makes you think this woman is capable of shaping the Court? What "intellectual enterprise," for lack of a better term, has she shaped? Running a law firm? Pretty thin. Evidence. Evidence. It's too big a deal to be left to feelings and intuition. Or, if it is to left to emotions, then term limits are a good idea.
after the leadership of the new chief justice roberts.
Would have been nice to give him someone who could actually be helpful. I mean, besides, opening the door and fetching coffee for the other justices.
If Roberts is the man all conservatives believe him to be
Hope him to be.
then Miers will be persuaded by their opinions on imprtant matters that come before the court in the future
Why should we settle for someone who needs to "be persuded," when folks who are capable of doing the persuading, both in public and private, are so plentiful? Why can't we have someone who we know can carry their own weight in these things?
I think its genius play if you believe that the basis of Miers faith is genuine
Sorry, but there's a tremondous gap between questions of faith and questions of constitutionality.
This is not genius. This is "jumped the shark." Had a 1st class nominee failed, Miers might, might have been appropriate. But not here.
