Perhaps I'm being cynical or Machiavellian, but I think this is the one that will step down after she gets beat up pretty bad or they find something to carp about and then the next one will be more conservative and get through. Just a guess...

Just a guess... If he were to nominate someone whose most obvious qualifications are her personal friendship to him, I think it would just damage his credibility. I suspect the Dems would confirm her, but if not, the road wouldn't be any easier for the next nominee.

I'm following your train of thought. How will the democrats justify voting for such a close associate of Bush when they can only guess at her potential voting record. On the other hand, this board indicates Republicans are deeply disappointed.
If Bush was trying to avoid controversy, he has failed.
