I seems to me that Staying in a Holiday INN last night does not prepare one to serve on the Supreme Court.
Don't know the actual qualifications for SC Justice, but I don't believe having been a judge is one of them. Rehnquist was not a judge prior to SC either, if my memory serves me right.
(My personal favorite was the former senator from TN, Fred Thompson!)

You are right ~ 36 previous SC Justices were not judges prior to being selected for the SC.
