This timing makes sense. Bush is going to be at the court today for their ceremony welcoming Roberts on the first day of the session. He obviously wants the pick revealed before that event, and the earlier he does it, the more it will have sunk in by the time of the ceremony.
And as others have noted, this will suck up the political news reporting for the whole week, as the new nominee is dissected in every possible way.
