A little OT, but maybe not, as it demonstrates the lackadaisical attitude that seems to have set in this long after 9/11. Last year, when I moved from Los Angeles to Miami, I drove cross-country on I-10 in a rental car. A few miles east of El Paso, Texas, I was stopped at a customs checkpoint. An agent came up to my window and asked, "US citizen?" I said yes. Then he asked, "Where you headed?" I said Miami from L.A. He said, "Okay, move along."
I was stunned. I had expected, at the very least, to be asked to show my DL. I was prepared to open my trunk. The agent had to tell me again to move along because I did a double-take.
Over a year later, I still can't believe the guy took my word for it that I was a US citizen, and didn't even ask to see my DL. I get asked to show my DL every time I use a credit card to buy something!
Racial profiling. You probably appearred to have too good of a command of the English language.
